Maidstone

County town of Kent, known as the ‘Garden of England’, Maidstone sits on the River Medway and grew in size and importance as a commercial centre from freight traffic transported on water in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s one of the largest shopping destinations in the south east of England, and just outside of town sits Leeds Castle, widely regarded as the most picturesque of all the castles in the UK. The castle is open to the public and sits in a fairy-tale setting surrounded by a very large moat.

Connected to the rest of the UK road network by both the M20 and M2 motorways, Maidstone is within reach of the London airports, though Gatwick is certainly the nearest. Of its three railway stations, the one easiest to get to from the London area is Maidstone East, which is about an hour’s travel from London Victoria.
