People say that organising a wedding is stressful, but when it came to our reception at the Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links this past July, my husband and I didn't have to worry about a thing! The wedding co-ordinator, Marcella, and the entire team took care of everything. From the moment we emailed to enquire, we found that the staff were polite, open to our ideas, happy to give advice based on experience and always available to respond to emails.
The hotel is beautifully decorated in creams, aquas and ocean blues. The style is fresh and modern and would make for beautiful wedding photos, no matter the weather. As it was, we were able to head out onto the dunes and get amazing photographs against an ocean backdrop.
Location-wise, my husband's family were travelling in from abroad, so PHGL was really easy to reach from the airport and the perfect combination of beach holiday and city break, as they could travel into Dublin city in 20 minutes or so.
I want to specifically mention the incredible personalised service we received around planning our reception meal: my husband and I both had serious dietary requirements, as did several of our guests. We were very concerned about tailoring the meal to make sure that everyone enjoyed it. When we raised this with Marcella, she arranged a phone call with the head chef, Tom, who took time out to speak to us for a good 10-15 minutes, finding out what we could and couldn't eat and making suggestions. He was able to cater for coeliac vegetarians, lactose-intolerant coeliacs, people with soya intolerances and more, without compromising on taste or originality. Everyone was delighted with the food and the pastry chef even whipped up a custom dessert for my husband that he is still raving about.
Through it all, we were made to feel that nothing was too much to ask and every time I met with Marcella, I felt as though I was sitting down with a friend. Kindness like that will never be forgotten.
