Southampton

Southampton is the largest city on England’s south coast and while it is no longer a hub for ferries to France and Spain, cruise liners still make a point of coming here in droves every year. It’s a major shopping destination for the region and a walk through its Old Town is a popular pursuit for visitors -- free guides are available for walking tours from local information offices, or you can instead join one of the expert paid guides to get a better sense of the stories of the buildings you’re seeing. Or take a walk along the old city walls or the sea front when you’re not investigating its shopping attractions or taking in a meal at one of the countless restaurants across the city centre.

You can get to Southampton directly from lots of UK and European destinations by flying into the small but well-served Southampton Airport, which has its own railway station close by. Trains into Southampton Central arrive from London, other towns along the south coast, and from Cardiff and Bristol.  By car, the city is at the southern end of the M3 motorway and connected to the entire motorway network from there.
