The First Dance : Meet Lydia of Your Wedding Dances

Some couples find it difficult to think of their first dance song, while others know it has to be ‘that song’, the one that has always meant something to them both. Then it comes to the actual first dance, whether you are a diva on the dance floor or have two left feet the thought of it can be a little daunting. You should consider getting a little help from a professional. Let me introduce you to choreographer and TV star Lydia Louisa of Your Wedding Dances. Lydia will create and teach you your wedding dance banishing any nerves on the day. Why not show your guests what you’ve got!

1. Hi Lydia, many wedding couples get nervous about the thoughts of their first dance. Why do you think that is?

Many people think the nerves come down to a lack of dance experience but I also believe that in this day and age we don’t dance with our partner as such so it’s a new experience when you are in hold for your first dance. It can feel awkward with all eyes on you which is where the nerves develop. Not everyone has dance ability and natural rhythm and our service gives you that time together to really experience the deep connection that develops when you dance with your partner, it can take peoples relationships to a whole new level!

2. What one piece of advise would you give to brides and grooms trying to choose their first dance song?

I think it should emote a reaction whether that is love or excitement! It is becoming increasingly popular to go a bit more up-tempo and I also have many people asking for mash-ups which is where two songs are blended together by our professional music editor as some people have more than one song they love!

3. How long will you need to work with a couple before the wedding in order to perfect their dance routine?

I choreograph the dance according to their abilities and preferences. Then we schedule a four hour rehearsal where I teach them the dance and we can work together to tweak any parts that need adjusting, sometimes the couples have a few of their own ideas so we can add that in within those four hours. We always film the dance at the end of the rehearsal so the couples have something to refer back to. I am also available for their wedding day if they feel they would like a run-through beforehand.

4. If a couple want to add something different to their reception are there any unusual style dances you can help plan?

Yes we offer flashmob style dances which are hugely popular as they are a total surprise! This can be the bridesmaids, ushers, family members etc. Some people choose to do this as a unique gift to the couple. Thriller and Dirty Dancing are the most popular but we can choreograph to any song and any style.

5. What led you to become a choreographer?

I have been a professional dancer in London for ten years and a professional choreographer for coming up to four years! As a choreographer I have worked with brands such as The Body Shop, Matalan, River Island, M&S, Channel 4, Living TV, House of Fraser, Topshop/Topman and many more.

6. Have you seen any wedding dance disasters in your experience?

I think the biggest disasters are when the couple don’t enjoy their first dance! I love nothing more than seeing a huge smile on the bride and grooms faces, but I have attended weddings where they can’t wait for the dance to be over which is such a shame and has shown me the need for this service!

7. What is your personal favourite first dance song to choreograph to?

A lovely couple I choreographed for back in January danced to Take That’s ‘Rule The World’ and I have to say it was magical!

8. Why do you think the first dance is so important?

Dancing with a loved one creates a deep connection, I always say the first dance is their first steps of marriage!

9. How do you like to spend your free time?

I love to relax with friends, going to restaurants or the cinema. I also spend much of my free time with my fiance decorating our new home.

Your Wedding Dances is a bespoke service offering professional dance choreography for a variety of wedding dances. In particular your first dance should be enjoyable so banish those nerves and take the first steps today to really wow your guests – Dirty Dancing anyone?! Unlike some other companies who outsource their work by hiring local dance teachers with limited experience, your wedding dance will be created and taught to you solely by professional choreographer and TV star Lydia Louisa.
