Wedding Favours: A Lil' History

A wedding favour is usually placed at each table setting for each of your guests at the reception. There are many choices out there when choosing favours. Most couples tie them into the theme of their wedding in terms of colour, design and style. Favours come in all shapes and sizes, and there is something to suit all budgets depending on how much your budget will allow you to spend.

Wedding favours are a way of thanking your guests for joining you on your very special day! Traditionally wedding favours were always a box or silk pouch filled with sugar almonds. This tradition dates back a number of centuries. European aristocrats used to present their guests with a small bag of sugar because at the time it was an expensive product. This went on to be replaced by five sugar coated almonds, which represented health, wealth, happiness and long life. The contrast of the bitterness of the nut and sweetness of the coating represented the bitter and sweet in marriage.

Nowadays favours can be anything from baked sweet treats to miniature potted plants. Some couples are even choosing charity favours. This is done leaving a note for each guest to say they have donated a certain amount on behalf of them to the charity of their choice. Some charities now even have custom made wedding favours. Many couples are also experimenting with DIY wedding favours, this can be budget friendly while also allowing you to add your personal touch.  A DIY wedding favour could be anything from a small jar of home made jam to a thank you DVD.

Use your imagination. And… have fun!
