Woking

Set in the heart of Surrey and a stalwart of the Counties, Woking holds on to it’s traditions with the canal, towpaths, popular Common and adjoining heathlands. An ancient market town, the pedestrianised town centre now boasts two modern and impressive shopping centres, but still hosts a traditional market for shoppers in the aptly named Market Place.

First mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Woking appears more recently as the landing site of the Martian’s planned invasion of Earth. H.G. Wells wrote the famous novel War of the Worlds while living in Woking, and the town honours this with The Woking Martian, a three-legged sculpture depicting the alien invaders from the book.

Couples looking to wed in Woking will be delighted to find that the town has great diversity in its copious houses of worship, and is home to the UK’s first purpose-built mosque, completed in 1889, as well as one of the oldest church doors in Britain, at St. Peter’s.

Woking’s position at the edge of the Greater London area makes it a popular commuter town. Woking’s Art Deco railway station has frequent service to Waterloo with a journey time under 30 minutes. By road it’s just outside the M25 motorway, about five miles to the north of Guildford, between the M3 and the A3.
